Courage & Personal Strengths

January 23, 20253 min read

Verbalizing personal strengths was always a struggle for me because I was overthinking and often overlooking myself. Sometimes, we tend to be our own biggest critic, and this can lead to self-delusion. I have noticed many people can relate, and I am here to share some insights I have discovered through my own journey of identifying personal strengths.

Your personal strengths are within YOU, and it’s up to YOU to uncover them in order to transform them into your POWER through courageous actions! They are like hidden gems—valuable once discovered and capable of enhancing the quality of your life.

Identifying your personal strengths can lead to breakthroughs in solving current issues, as well as increased courage and confidence to face challenges.

Ways to Embrace Your Courage and Personal Strengths

1. Identify Your Personal Strengths by Reflecting on Past Successes

  • List 3-5 moments where you felt accomplished.

  • Identify the key strengths/skills you used to achieve those goals.

  • Example: Graduating college Magna Cum Laude while working three jobs to pay for college.

  • Personal strengths include: Perseverance, Self-Discipline, Time Management, Strong Work Ethic, Adaptability, Problem-Solving, and Determination.

2. Strengths Mapping

  • List out personal strengths.

  • Identify how they can be applied in different areas of your life.

  • Example: Adaptability

    • Work: Allows you to handle sudden changes with ease. You can shift focus and adjust your approach to meet new demands.

    • Personal Life: You can be flexible and open to new experiences. Adjust to life changes such as moving or having a new routine.

    • Relationships: Able to adjust to dynamic changes or others’ needs while maintaining harmony.

3. Turn Fear into Fuel

  • Use fear as fuel for growth. Trent Shelton says, “Fear isn’t something to avoid; it’s a signal that you’re on the verge of a breakthrough.”

  • Identify current fears and write down one small step toward facing them.

  • Each step will build strength and reduce the fear.

  • Example: Fear of job interviews and the anxiety of not performing well.

    • Conduct a mock interview with a friend to practice your responses, making it less daunting.

    • View interviews as opportunities for growth rather than threats. Empower yourself to approach future interviews with a sense of control and courage through increased confidence.

4. Positive Affirmations

  • Develop affirmations that reinforce your courage and strengths, such as “I am capable of overcoming challenges” or “I grow stronger with every act of bravery.”

Gaining POWER Through Courage and Personal Strengths

Through embracing my courage and personal strengths, I learned that I was capable of more than I thought. I discovered how much I was actually limiting myself through limiting beliefs and the fear of failure. As I built practices of acknowledging my courage and strengths, my self-worth and confidence increased immensely.

One thing that I have consistently done during times where I need to summon my personal strengths and courage is to find strong quotes that resonate with me. These kinds of quotes remind me that I am capable of achieving whatever comes my way. One quote that I consistently use to summon the strongest part of myself is, “All I need is within me.” It reminds me that I only need myself to get started; I don’t need to know it all—I just need to begin, and I will discover the rest in the process of the journey.
